About ARPJAM StudioStorefront description supplied by Apple.

Straight to sound design.

A generative synthesizer that takes you straight to the best part of a synth — no keyboard, no step entry.

The most fun part of a synth is sound design. But normally there's a wall in front of it: playing and sequencing. And the catch is that your sounds only come alive once there's a performance behind them — tweaking a tone while you poke a single key just isn't any fun.

ARPJAM Studio removes that wall. Press play and the music starts running on its own. From there, just shape the waveform, filter, envelope and effects however you like — every change lands inside the track instantly. Want to play, or steer where the music goes? Do it whenever you like. But start with the best part first.

■ Carve the randomness away, shape it into a single form

What ARPJAM Studio puts out is raw randomness. You carve that down — through tone, trigger probability, position, harmony and rhythm — and shape it into a song, like a sculpture. Ambient, reggae, whatever you hear: the intent always stays on your side. It's the opposite of the hands-off "the AI made it, not me" feeling.

■ Made for you if

• You're drawn to synths but gave up because you can't play keys.

• You don't have time to study theory or step-sequencing, but you want to make music.

• You love shaping sound itself — sound design above all.

• You want to create your own ambient for focus or sleep, by hand.

• You're looking for an instrument you can improvise with on stage or in the studio.

■ Features

[Core engines — three run in parallel]

• ARP A / ARP B: two fully independent generative arpeggios. Five waveforms, resonant low-pass filter, ADSR envelope. Six arp types: Random Chord / Single / Repeat / Skank / Drone / 16-step Pattern.

• AVOID mode: auto-adjusts so harmonies never clash.

• DRUMS: KICK / SNARE / HIHAT / NOISE, generated with probability control — drums that don't rely on fixed patterns.

[Shape the flow]

• CHORD PROGRESSION: set a progression and every engine locks onto those chords, building the flow of a song.

• XY SETTING: assign several parameters to the XY pad and reshape the song's expression in real time.

• Six LFOs (four sines + two pulses): assignable to knobs and on/off switches, keeping your settings moving automatically over time.

[PLAY PAD]

• Layer your own playing over the auto-running performance. The keys are laid out in the current scale order, so it's more intuitive than a standard keyboard.

[Save & share]

• STOCKS: nine preset slots (tap to load, hold to save).

• IMPORT / EXPORT: write settings out to a file and back in — share across devices or keep backups.

• JAM LIBRARY: browse and audition jams made by artists worldwide online, and pull them into your hands with one tap.

[Sync]

• Ableton Link and MIDI Clock (receive) supported — play in time with your external gear.

■ Best on iPad

The landscape studio shows every engine at a glance. Fully supported on iPhone too, with a focused, swipeable layout.

No keyboard skills, no music theory, no empty timeline. Press play, and lose yourself in the sound.

No sequence. No play. The sound — and the chance — are yours to shape.

A no-play instrument from twelvetone.
