HOW TO PLAY

Blackbird is played by four players in two teams, with partners sitting opposite each other. The deck has 41 cards: four suits (Black, Green, Red, Yellow) numbered 5 to 14, plus the special Blackbird card. The Blackbird is worth 20 points, every 14 and 10 is worth 10, and every 5 is worth 5.

Each player is dealt 9 cards, with 5 set aside as the Nest. Teams bid for the points they think they can win, starting at 70 and topping out at 120. The winning bidder picks the trump suit and may swap cards with the Nest.

Play moves clockwise, starting left of the bid winner. Follow the suit that's led when you can; the highest card takes the trick, and the trick winner leads next. Take the last trick and you claim the Nest — along with any points hiding in it. Win the points you bid, and you score them; fall short, and you lose them. First team to 300 points wins.
