Nought Spreadsheet

Nought is a spreadsheet for the Mac. It opens your .xlsx files directly, edits them, and saves them back. No import wizard, no export step, no account.

It is written in Swift and AppKit. Not a web page in a window.

WORKS WITH YOUR FILES Open and save .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm, .ods and .csv. Export to PDF with charts rendered in place. Macro-enabled workbooks open, and their macros are preserved when you save back to .xlsm.

FORMULAS Over 200 functions: maths, statistics, lookup, text, date and time, financial, engineering, logical, information, and dynamic arrays that spill. Cross-sheet references and named ranges with workbook or sheet scope. Autocomplete suggests functions as you type, with signatures and argument hints.

PIVOT TABLES Nested row and column fields, several value fields with independent aggregations, per-field filters, and date grouping by month or quarter. Show values as a percentage of total or as a running total. Pivots refresh when the source data changes, and save into .xlsx as a real pivot cache that Excel opens.

CHARTS Twenty-three types: bar and horizontal bar, line and step line, pie and donut, area, stacked area, 100% stacked area, scatter, bubble, combo, waterfall, stacked and 100% stacked bar, radar, stock, treemap, sunburst, histogram, Pareto, box and whisker, and funnel. Interactive tooltips and series highlighting on hover. Trendlines: linear, exponential, logarithmic, power, polynomial and moving average.

Copy any chart as an image, or export it as PNG or SVG. The SVG is real vector output, with live, editable text, so it stays sharp and stays editable in a design tool.

DATA TOOLS Multi-level sort by value, cell colour or font colour, with custom lists and natural ordering for text. Auto-filter with per-column dropdowns. Remove duplicates, text to columns, subtotals, Goal Seek, Solver, Scenario Manager and data consolidation. Data validation with dropdown lists, numeric and date ranges, text length, or a custom formula.

FORMATTING Conditional formatting with 17 rule types, including colour scales and data bars. Cell styles, custom number formats, eleven currencies, borders, merged cells, text wrapping and a format painter. Sparklines: line, bar and win/loss.

BUILT FOR THE MAC Universal binary for Apple silicon and Intel. Dark mode. VoiceOver labels, keyboard navigation and reduced-motion support. Pinch or Option+scroll to zoom from 25% to 400%. Freeze panes, split views, multiple sheets with tab colours.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN Nought has no network access at all. Nothing you open is uploaded, because there is nowhere for it to go. No account, no sync, no telemetry.
