The unique commentary of the twentieth century, "Tafheem-ul-Quran", is the essence of the life of the great commentator, thinker and reformer Maulana Syed Abul-Ala Maududi, which he spent thirty years of his life completing.

The style adopted by Maulana Maududi in this commentary, which covers six volumes and more than four thousand pages, has influenced millions of hearts, especially among the young generation, and the feeling of understanding the Quran and acting on it has rapidly emerged. The first feature of this commentary is that it presents the Holy Quran as a guide for people and a book of guidance, the purpose of which is that by following it, man can escape the terrible disasters of this world and the hereafter and attain true prosperity and happiness. The author of the commentary has explained the purpose of the Quran on matters such as beliefs, worship, ethics, society, economy, politics, justice, war and peace, etc., as appropriate, and has proven that the Quran pays full attention to the reform of society along with the purification of the individual.

The second distinguishing characteristic of this commentary is its invitational and motivational style. Maulana, through a deep study of the Quran and Sunnah, came to the conclusion that just as the Holy Prophet (PBUH) began his work by calling upon Allah, forming the Muslim society, bringing the entire Arabian Peninsula under one law and one code, raising the Word of Allah and subduing falsehood, the Holy Quran continued to guide Muslims in all these stages and teach them ways of building in different spheres of life. Even today, the Holy Quran has the same dynamic.

In Tafheem-ul-Quran, the Quran has been presented in such a way that on the one hand, the reader becomes familiar with the background in which the Holy Quran was revealed, and on the other hand, he feels that the Quranic teachings are in harmony with the times.

Tafhim-ul-Quran (Urdu: تفهيم القرآن, romanized: Towards Understanding the Qur'an) is a 6-volume translation and commentary of the Qur'an by Pakistani philosopher Syed Abul Ala Maududi. Tafhim is derived from the Arabic word fahm which means "understanding". Tafhim is a combination of orthodox and modernist interpretation and has deeply influenced modern Islamic thought. It differs from traditional exegeses in several ways. It is more than a traditional commentary on the scripture as it contains discussions and debates regarding economics, sociology, history, and politics. In his text, Maududi highlights Quranic perspective and argues that Islam provides ample guidance in all spheres. Maududi uses the standard technique of providing an explanation of the Qur'anic verses from the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), including the historical reasons behind the verses. The Tafhim deals extensively with issues faced by the modern world in general and the Muslim community in particular. Maududi wrote the tafhimul quran in Urdu. It has since been translated to languages including English, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi and Pashto. First English translation was done by Chaudhry Akbar Khan. In 2006, the Islamic Foundation published an abridged one-volume English translation by Zafar Ishaq Ansari under the title Towards Understanding the Qur'an.
