티베트어는 유라시아 대륙의 중앙시나·티베트 어족의 티베트·버마어파 티베트어에 속하는 언어.

방언의 차이는 있지만 2종 내지 4종의 성조를 가져 성조가 존재하지 않은 사투리도 있다.티베트 약 600만명, 국외에 이주한 약 15만명 티베트인이 모국어로 사용한다.
