GeoPreview

GeoPreview is a Finder-native GIS preview utility for macOS.

Select a geospatial file in Finder, press Space, and inspect the data before opening a full desktop GIS application. GeoPreview is for quick file checks: maps, layers, attributes, geometry, CRS metadata, point clouds, and dataset folders.

It is built for GIS analysts, data analysts, project managers, surveyors, software developers, cartographers, planners, engineers, and teams that receive geodata from clients, agencies, field crews, or data portals.

Use it to:

• Preview GIS files in Finder Preview Pane and Quick Look

• Check GeoJSON, Shapefile/SHP, GeoPackage/GPKG, KML, GPX, LAS/LAZ, FileGDB, and more

• Inspect feature attributes and copy field values

• Switch layers in multi-layer datasets

• Review LiDAR point clouds, CAD drawings, and dataset folders

• Export supported geodata from Finder with a Quick Action

GeoPreview is not a GIS editor or analysis suite. It is the fast step before opening one: confirm what a file contains, whether the geometry is usable, which layers are present, and whether the metadata looks right.

Supported formats include:

Shapefile (SHP), GeoJSON, GeoJSONL, GeoPackage (GPKG), KML, KMZ, GPX, GML, FlatGeobuf, GeoParquet, Parquet, OSM XML/PBF, PMTiles, MVT, DXF, DGN, DWG, LAS, and LAZ.

Dataset folders are supported too, including File Geodatabase (.gdb), shapefile folders, and parquet layer folders.

Privacy:

Everything runs locally on your Mac. There is no account, no upload workflow, and no tracking.

Very large datasets, unusual coordinate reference systems, and format limits can affect preview speed or export choices.
